A Pittsburgh Host Family Shares their CIEE Experience

Expand the world: Host an exchange student

Tony Norman, a Pittsburgh area journalist discusses his family's experience hosting Par, a 17 year old from Thailand. It is a great snapshot of hosting a CIEE exchange student.

"When we met Par... she already had an irrepressible smile. She was a stranger, but she wasn't intimidated. Living with us would be just another challenge she had set for herself on her way to adulthood. She intended to absorb as much as she could about American life before returning to Bangkok to finish the 12th grade.`"

CIEE Students help on a Soggy Cleanup day

On a grey town clean-up day, three souls braved the low temperatures and driving rain. Sue Dawson, a foreign exchange student host, and foreign exchange students Malika, of Turkmenistan, and Yousef of Egypt, worked to clear leaves from the McCarthy Middle School tennis courts.   The students must complete community service as a way of repaying their opportunity to study for a year in the United States. Dawson said that participating in town clean-up was a way of "giving back to the community." Patch was their to urge them on (and even drag a bag of leaves to the curb), and learn a little bit more about town clean-up and the foreign exchange program.

Speedwell Scholarships for Gap Year Programs for American Students in Lancaster and Lebanon Counties (PA)

CIEE: Council on International Educational Exchange is pleased to announce the establishment of the Speedwell Study Abroad Scholarship for participation in CIEE Gap Year Abroad programs during the Fall 2011 semester. These scholarships, funded by a generous grant from the Speedwell Foundation, will make it possible for ten 2011 graduates of Lancaster and Lebanon County (Pennsylvania) high schools to participate in one of six semester-long CIEE Gap Year Abroad programs, located in Valparaíso, Chile; Shanghai, China; Santiago, Dominican Republic; Paris, France; Tokyo, Japan; or Seville, Spain.

The gap year, long a feature of education in the U.K. and Australia, is an experience designed specifically for students between high school and college. Gap year participation, an opportunity to gain language fluency, explore new educational interests, and gain maturity, is fast gaining popularity in the U.S. CIEE Gap Year Abroad offers recent high school graduates who have deferred college enrollment the opportunity for intensive language study, homestay accommodation, volunteer service, and cultural immersion in one of six Gap Year Abroad locations around the world.

The Speedwell Study Abroad Scholarship will cover program costs, including round trip international air travel, of a semester abroad (Fall 2011) in one of six CIEE Gap Year Abroad locations. Recipients will be selected in a competitive process with multiple reviewers, based on academic achievement, maturity and flexibility, genuine interest in the program, appreciation for the scholarship, and recommendations.

Interested graduating high school seniors are invited to learn more and access the application form at www.ciee.org/gap/speedwellscholarship. All applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:
  • Spring 2011 graduate of a Lancaster/Lebanon high school, including private high schools
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0, two years of high school language study
  • College or university application(s) in progress at the time of applying

Completed applications must be postmarked no later than April 1, 2011. Scholarship recipients will be notified by May 1. Prospective applicants should contact their school counselor or CIEE International Studies Director Caeley Cote (ccote@ciee.org, 207.553.4127, www.ciee.org/gap/speedwellscholarship) for more information.

CIEE Announces a Summer Contest: Two Months 35 Countries

Summer contest logo More than 35,000 people travel the world on CIEE programs every year-studying, teaching, interning, working abroad. We are looking for someone to spend their summer traveling with them and telling their CIEE stories!

Wonder where they go and what they'll do? The two month journey may well start with a week in Thailand following students teaching English in an elementary school. Then, on to a week in Dublin with students preparing for a summer working in the U.S., then on to Botswana where CIEE students are examining issues related to public health in developing countries. And that's just the start.

We're looking for a college grad with international travel experience who has what it takes to tell the CIEE story. Help us to spread the word about this exciting opportunity. Act quickly because applications are due on February 15.
